Nutritional Health Foods for Kids and the Effect on Behavior
Posted on March 11th, 2010
After a night of “trick or treating” the amount of sugar in children’s bloodstreams is higher than normal. Any parent or elementary school teacher will tell you that sugar clearly effects children’s behavior, and will give you anecdotal examples of situations that illustrate this. If you are a parent or teacher, it may surprise you to hear that the effect of sugar intake on children’s behavior is a hotly debated topic in pediatrics
The belief that consumption of refined sugar can lead to behavior disturbance or hyperactivity in children is widespread. Wolraich and colleagues reviewed the literature to evaluate this purported association in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The authors conclude that no effect of sugar on behavior or cognitive performance in children has been proved based on studies to date. However, placebo-controlled trials have shown that parents believe sugar has a negative effect on their children’s behavior, and this belief may be hard to counter. (Wolraich ML, et al. The effect of sugar on behavior or cognition in children: a meta-analysis. JAM 1995;274:1617-21.)
Having just witness the post Halloween frenzy of a group of five year olds that I know well, it seems hard to believe the study above. Here were a group of children who regularly play together, and though active, are rarely extreme. This Halloween evening they were running in circles around the house for a full hour, screeching and laughing and climbing all over each other and the furniture. Given that this is not the normal behavior for this group of children and given that they’d each eaten at least 4-6 pieces of candy prior to the behavior, it makes logical sense that there’s a relationship.
In the literature from more alternative sources, the effect of sugar on behavior has been found to be true. At the Natural Health and Longevity Resource Center website, http://www.all-natural.com/add.html, Dr. Allen Buresz agrees with the importance of nutritional health foods for kids. In an article entitled Attention Deficit Disorder & Hyperactivity Success, Dr. Buresz states, “it’s a known fact that the elimination of food additives and refined sugar produces dramatic improvements [in symptoms of ADD & ADHD].”
If you’re concerned about diet, nutrition and your child’s behavior, a wonderful option is to visit a naturopathic physician. Naturopaths specialize in treating the whole person, and recognize the importance of nutritional health foods for kids. They will spend a large amount of time with you and your child, gathering information on everything from physical symptoms, emotional presentation, diet, sleep, behavior and other areas. From that history and an exam your Naturopathic physician will prescribe some combination of herbs, homeopathic medication, nutritional health foods, nutritional supplements, or specific techniques, to address your child’s problem area(s). To learn more about naturopathic physicians and to locate a licensed naturopathic physician in your area, check out the website at http://www.naturopathic.org.
An important part of a nutritional program for both children and adults is the addition of a liquid nutritional supplement to your diet. Liquid nutritional supplements are more effectively assimilated by the body as compared with pills, which means you get more nutrition for your money with liquid nutritional supplements. Many liquid nutritional supplements actually taste good, which means your children will want to take them. Some recent nutritional health foods are juices which combine a few different fruits, berries and herbs into a good tasting drink. A product like this would be a great nutritional health food for kids, since they would be getting many different types of nutrients in one beverage. Make sure you read the labels on products like this to look for any added sugar or chemicals. Some beverages pose as “healthy”, when in fact they are loaded with added sugar.
Adding nutritional health foods for kids to your child’s diet can only be beneficial. Even if you are not addressing any specific behavior issues, good nutrition is a wonderful gift to give to your loved ones.

Choosing Sports Nutrition Supplements
Posted on March 11th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com
At some point, sooner or later, someone is going to ask you what kind of nutrition supplements you are taking. Today we are going to cover a few of the most common, and give you an idea of what you should be looking for based on your current level of fitness.
Protein: Protein is without a doubt, the most important supplement you can take. Protein is the basic component in building muscle, and if you don’t get enough in your diet then your body will actually breakdown muscle to get what it needs (a process called Catabolism). There are two main types of Protein; Whey, and Soy. Whey is much better by far, however Soy is also a good lower cost alternative is budget is an issue.
Creatine: Creatine is probably the most popular of all nutrition supplements. Most commonly seen and sold as Creatine Monohydrate, it is a naturally occurring substance in red meat, and is also produced by our bodies. It’s primary function is to provide our muscles with energy, however it’s the additional gains in muscle mass that have made it so popular.
Nitric Oxide: Nitric Oxide is another naturally occurring compound that can be great as a nutritional supplement. It’s a vasodilator that increases blood flow and vascularity, giving your muscles that “pumped” feeling longer and helping with recovery.
Glutamine: Glutamine is an amino acid that is used to help with the immune system and muscle maintenance. It is (like most of the others on this list) naturally occurring in the body and available from your diet. However, many people supplement with Glutamine (sold mostly as L-Glutamine) when taking part in any exercise program due to the increased depletion in our bodies.
These are the core nutrition supplements that I would recommend for “beginners”. There are thousands more products on the market, and it’s easy to spend a small fortune on supplements and see little to no result. To maintain the objectivity of this blog, I won’t recommend any specific place to buy nutrition supplements, I will say that aside from your traditional stores (GNC, Vitamin World, etc), most Wal-Mart Supercenters carry all of the above mentioned supplements. Make sure that you compare labels (a little online research wouldn’t hurt either) when shopping to ensure you’re actually getting what you pay for.

Herbal Nutrition Supplements: The 5W’s
Posted on March 10th, 2010
Herbal nutrition supplements are everywhere these days. So should you be taking them? To help you decide for yourself, here are the whos, whats, whens, wheres and whys on herbal nutrition.
Herbal Nutrition Supplements: What Are They?
The National Library of Medicine gives this definition: “Herbal supplements are a type of dietary supplement… that contain herbs, either singly or in mixtures”.
Herbal nutrition supplements come in a variety of different forms, however, and some are better and safer than others. The Mayo Clinic advises you to “select products that have been scientifically tested”.
Quality Herbal Supplements: Why Take Them?
There is a good chance that quality herbal supplements may be a healthy choice for you. Herbal nutrition supplements are excellent for people who are unable to meet their nutritional requirements because of food allergies, medical conditions, or busy schedules that don’t leave enough time to control and monitor nutrient intake.
Quality Natural Supplements: Who Should Take Them?
Herbal nutrition supplements can be very beneficial for a wide range of people who need to fill in the nutritional gaps left by an incomplete diet.
However, there are also people who should not take herbal nutrition supplements. Check with your doctor first if you have:
High blood pressure
Thyroid problems
Parkinson’s disease
An enlarged prostate gland
Blood clotting problems
Diabetes
Heart disease
Epilepsy
Glaucoma
History of stroke
Liver problems
Or, if you are pregnant or nursing
Herbal Nutrition Supplements: When Should You Take Them?
Herbal nutrition supplements can serve as a great complement to your diet or as an addition to conventional medicine. It’s important to note, however, that in some cases, combining herbal nutrition supplements with other medicine can be lethal. If you’re currently taking any doctor prescribed or over-the-counter medicine, be sure to consult your doctor before taking any herbal nutrition supplements.
Quality Herbal Supplements: Where Do You Find Them?
Herbal nutrition supplements are not all created equal. The Mayo Clinic warns that you “be extremely cautious about taking herbs manufactured or purchased outside the United States.” They add that, “toxic ingredients and prescription drugs have been found in some herbal supplements manufactured in other countries.” Your best bet is to stick to well-known products with wide usage and a popular history.
Herbal nutrition supplements, when used by the right person, at the right time can have incredible health benefits. If you think herbal nutrition supplements might be right for you and you’d like to learn more, click here to take a nutrition survey.

The BEST Energy Supplements for Chronic Fatigue – Revealed
Posted on March 9th, 2010
Elite athletes suffer from it, couch potatoes get it, office workers and people who work outdoors suffer from it. Chronic fatigue still remains a mystery disease that affects a large percentage of the population. The good news is that natural energy supplements, along with changes to diet, can make a difference to your health.
Before we explain how essential nutrients are perfect as energy supplements for chronic fatigue, it’s important to talk a little about the cause of the problem.
Chronic fatigue is actually a complex of symptoms with multiple causal factors – most patients suffering chronic fatigue usually have two or more factors associated with their ‘disease’.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complicated disorder characterized by a lack of energy that doesn’t improve with rest and may even worsen during any physical or mental activity.
Not a great deal is known about the disease, however it can occur after an infection such as a cold, glandular fever (mononucleosis or Epstein Barr virus), intestinal illness or low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Diet and Lifestyle
Here are some lifestyle changes you can adopt to help deal with fatigue and tiredness:
o eliminate caffeine, alcohol, fried foods and margarine and foods containing processed sugar.
o have an allergy test – as food allergies can sometimes be responsible for fatigue (as well as a lack of nutrients in the diet).
o have a liver flush to detoxify your system.
o Reflexology, chiropractic manipulation and massage can also help. An Applied Kinesiologist friend in Singapore successfully treats people suffering chronic fatigue.
Natural Energy Supplements: Vitamins, Minerals and Essential Fatty Acids
In order to function properly, the body needs optimal amounts of the all of the essential nutrients – 60 minerals, 16 vitamins, 12 amino acids and 2 to 3 essential fatty acids. If we lack any of them in our diet then we can develop health problems and diseases.
Plant derived liquid minerals along with a good source of very high quality multi-vitamins and essential fatty acids are ideal. They help by giving your system a real boost by improving cellular function, improving nutrition to the cells and making the supply of energy more efficient.
A Chromium supplement can assist with maintaining healthy blood sugar levels as low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia is frequently associated with the condition and can also make you feel tired.
Sports Energy Supplements
A recent development in health and nutrition has been the advent of ‘functional drinks’ – particularly those developed for sport. I’m not talking about ‘Red Bull’ or some other sugar-and-caffeine-infested-carbonated drink, I’m talking about health drinks containing a range of nutrients.
The best ones to look for will be drinks developed for sport. Look for those containing a blend of vitamins and minerals, they should be low in sugar and carbohydrates and high in protein (so that rules out most of the real popular drinks like Gatorade) and ideally may contain a small amount of natural green tea that is an ideal and very healthy ‘pick me up’.

Dangers Associated With Excess Omega 3 Supplements Consumption
Posted on March 9th, 2010
The most effective way to fight against many deadly diseases including cancer and to improve the overall quality of life is to consume fish oil and omega 3 sources on a regular basis. However, omega 3 supplements should be consumed with care as excess omega 3 consumption may cause side effects and some other symptoms.
Omega 3 fish oil supplements are easily available on market for purchase. They are available under the category of over-the-counter drugs and anyone can use them without even consulting with a doctor. But, in addition to finding the best omega 3 fish oil supplement, you also need to be careful about its dosage.
Normal dosage is usually written on the bottle or cover of a nutritional supplement product. However, if not written you should keep in mind that our body can absorb only 300 to 400 mg of omega 3 fats on a daily basis. It needs certain enzymes and vitamin E to absorb fats properly, and if these enzymes are not working correctly we will soon end up with many stomach problems and other common symptoms.
Symptoms associated with excess omega 3 fatty acids consumption may include hardening of arteries, skin irritation, upset stomach, nausea, unusual and frequent headaches, diarrhea and constipation. If these conditions occur, immediately discontinue the use of fish oil capsules and see a doctor.
You need to remember that excess of everything is dangerous for health and omega 3 fatty acids are no different. Excessive intake of these fats at once may complicate already deteriorating health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and obesity. In diabetic patients, constant bleeding is sometimes observed as a symptom of overdose of nutritional supplements containing high concentration of minerals and other nutrients.
Some other side effects observed in normal healthy people include stomach cramps, sleeplessness, bad mouth taste and acne. These symptoms should go away after a few days when the stomach gets used to the new supplement product. However, if they don’t go away, immediately consult a doctor.
Pregnant women are strongly advised to check with their doctor before starting the course of any nutritional supplement product. Vegetarians are advised not to consume DHA and EPA at once through vegetable oils because these oils can lower blood pressure significantly if taken in excess quantities.
Always find the best quality nutritional supplements available out there to avoid these symptoms and adverse health conditions.

Nutritional Wonders – Omega 3 Eggs
Posted on March 8th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com
A large number of medical conditions can be treated completely or ameliorated by increasing the amount of omega 3 fatty acids in our bodies. These fatty acids are also called essential acids, as they are vital for our good health. However, the human body cannot produce these fatty acids on its own and it needs to add them through proper diet or through supplements. A woman’s body requires around 1100mg, while a man’s body requires about 1500mgx of omega 3 fatty acids.
DHA docohexaenoic acid, EPA eicosapentoic acid, and ALA alpha- linolenic acid, are the three essential omega 3 acids. The richest sources for omega 3 are fish, especially cold water fish, and green leaf vegetables.
Nowadays, because of the benefits omega 3 fatty acids have on our health, more and more food producers include these fatty acids to aliments. Some eggs also come omega 3 enriched. Compared to a typical egg, an egg coming from a chicken which was given omega 3 foods contains many times the amounts of omega 3 oils.
The way to get omega 3 rich eggs is to change the food chicken receive in farms. They are fed flax seeds and special foods which contain insects, which are very rich natural omega 3 sources. That is why these eggs cost more than regular eggs which come from chicken fed the usual corn and soybean mix and their availability may be limited in some areas.
Food producers are concerned about adding omega 3 fatty acids to their products because consuming products which are naturally omega 3 rich is preferable to taking supplements.
However, not all effects of omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial to human health. Because one of these effects is the thinning of the blood, you may encounter problems in case of a surgery or if you are injured.
Consult with a specialist before taking any omega 3 supplements, as they can prescribe you the necessary doses or propose you some changes in your diet. He or she can advise you on whether you are allowed or not to take omega 3 supplements or change your diet if you are already taking blood thinning medication, as it can lead to excessive bleeding.
Your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on the possible side effects and possible interactions of omega 3 fatty acids with other drugs or vitamins.
